Diplomatic Milestone: Saudi Arabia's Mediation Efforts Applauded by Ukraine for Peace Talks

Riyadh: The Ukrainian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia has expressed gratitude to the Kingdom for hosting discussions aimed at forging a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in his country, a move that has garnered significant praise for its constructive diplomacy.

Petrenko Anatolii, in a statement provided to Arab News, hailed the talks held in Jeddah, commending them as “constructive” and acknowledging Saudi Arabia’s commitment and hospitality in facilitating a platform for dialogue.

Anatolii stated, “With Saudi support, we succeeded in bringing together national security advisers from 42 countries.” He expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s dedication to advancing their peace formula plan, a testament to the Kingdom’s steadfast role in international diplomacy.

Ukraine unveiled its anticipated 10-point peace formula during the discussions, a move that received support from multiple nations, as indicated by a source from the Ukrainian delegation. President Volodomyr Zelensky has articulated his aspiration for a global summit later this year based on this formula.

Anatolii further elaborated, “The last two days have proven to be constructive. A broad vision is in place and we collectively make gradual progress in preparation of the (upcoming) global summit, which is considered to be the focal point to start implementing the peace formula.”

The focal points of the talks encompass halting military aggression against Ukraine, reinstating territorial integrity and sovereignty, initiating Ukraine’s economic recovery, and bolstering confidence in international law and the UN charter.

Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, highlighted the productive consultations on key principles that underpin a just and lasting peace. Acknowledging the candid exchange of differing perspectives during the Saudi talks, Yermak emphasized the commitment displayed by all participating countries to principles of international law and respect for state sovereignty.

While Russia abstained from the discussions, the Kremlin affirmed its vigilance in monitoring the proceedings.

A US official conveyed Washington’s gratitude to Riyadh for hosting the talks, labeling them “constructive” and emphasizing their significance in promoting a just and enduring peace, ending the conflict in Ukraine, and addressing the repercussions of Russia’s actions. The official praised the attendance of over 40 countries, characterizing the event as a platform for direct engagement with Ukraine’s narrative and fostering a collective understanding.
