Imran Khan Incarcerated in Attock Prison as Court Order Missteps Emerge
Attock, August 6, 2023 — Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has found himself lodged in the high-security Attock prison in Attock city, contrary to the original order directing his detention in Adiala jail, Rawalpindi. This development follows Khan’s conviction in a corruption case and subsequent arrest from his Lahore residence.
The 70-year-old leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was found guilty in the Toshakhana corruption case and was handed a three-year prison sentence. However, a mix-up in the implementation of the court order led to his placement in Attock prison instead of Adiala jail.
The court order, issued by additional district and sessions judge Humayun Dilawar, tasked the Islamabad police chief with Khan’s arrest and transportation to Adiala jail. Yet, the Punjab police were the ones to apprehend Khan and eventually place him in Attock prison, all under tight security measures.
Khan’s legal entanglements and swift arrest have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his apprehension. PTI spokesperson Zulifi Bokhari confirmed Khan’s transfer to Attock Jail and highlighted the security measures in place.
Attock is situated along the Indus River, with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on the opposite bank. The prison holds historical significance, having previously housed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after the overthrow of his government by former President Pervez Musharraf.
Khan’s close aide and former Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi expressed concerns about the timing and nature of the arrest. He questioned whether the police had prior knowledge of the court’s decision.
This latest legal setback marks the second time in three months that Khan has been arrested. Earlier, in May, he was detained in Islamabad for the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, which led to violent protests by his supporters.
The Toshakhana case revolves around Khan’s alleged concealment of details regarding gifts retained from the Toshakhana, a repository for presents received by government officials from foreign dignitaries during his tenure as Prime Minister. These gifts and proceeds from their sales are at the center of the corruption charges.
As Pakistan approaches general elections later this year, Khan’s legal entanglements pose challenges to his political future. The verdict and subsequent developments have raised speculation about the impact on Pakistan’s political landscape as it navigates through a period of transition and potential change.
