Greece Seeks to Strengthen Cooperation with Gulf States, Particularly Saudi Arabia, in Green Projects and Energy
NEW YORK CITY: Greece aims to expand its collaboration with Gulf states, notably Saudi Arabia, in the realm of green projects and renewable initiatives. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis highlighted the efforts to position Greece as a bridge between the Middle East and Europe, particularly in energy interconnection. The country seeks to become a trans-regional meeting point for energy, communications, and logistics. Gerapetritis also emphasized Greece’s commitment to addressing climate change and achieving its national target of sourcing 80% of its electricity from renewables by 2027. Greece recently signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia to explore the possibility of linking their power grids, marking the first step towards providing Europe with cheaper clean energy. Energy cooperation, including renewable sources and green hydrogen, is a significant aspect of this partnership.
Moreover, Greece’s foreign policy is guided by international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, with a focus on fostering stability in a region marked by various challenges, including conflicts, migration, public health emergencies, and climate change.
