But according to Dr. Tushar Tayal, Consultant – Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, the real secret lies in simplicity. In a conversation with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Tayal shared, “Living a healthy life doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, daily habits can make a big difference in how you feel and how your body works.”

Eat Smart, Not Fancy
Start with your plate. A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health, and it doesn’t mean giving up your favorite foods. Carbohydrates like rice, roti, oats, and sweet potatoes are essential for energy. Dr. Tayal suggests choosing whole grains over refined ones—opt for brown rice, whole wheat bread, and include millets when possible.

Don’t skimp on fruits and vegetables. Aim for at least 4–5 servings a day, focusing on colorful fruits and green leafy vegetables packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Proteins and fats play crucial roles too. Include healthy fats from sources like nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados. Avoid fried and processed foods which are often high in unhealthy fats and additives. And most importantly, don’t forget water—6 to 8 glasses a day can keep your body hydrated and curb unnecessary cravings.

Move Your Body
You don’t need a gym membership to stay fit. Dr. Tayal recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days. This can be anything that gets your heart rate up—brisk walking, dancing, cycling, or even cleaning the house.

Mix your movement. Combine cardio (like jogging or walking), strength exercises (body weight or light weights), and stretching for a balanced routine. The key is to stay active in a way that feels enjoyable and sustainable.

Rest is Power
Sleep is often overlooked, but it’s just as important as diet and exercise. Adults should aim for 7–8 hours of quality sleep each night. Dr. Tayal advises sticking to a consistent sleep schedule—going to bed and waking up at the same time daily.

Avoid screens at least an hour before bed to promote better rest. That late-night scroll through your phone could be interfering with your body’s natural wind-down process.

Take Care of Your Mind
Your mental well-being directly affects your physical health. Just 5–10 minutes of daily quiet time, meditation, or deep breathing can significantly lower stress levels and boost focus. Yoga and mindfulness practices can also bring calm to a chaotic day.

Avoid What Harms
Limit alcohol intake. “A drink or two occasionally is okay,” says Dr. Tayal, “but too much can damage your liver and brain.” Smoking, on the other hand, is best avoided altogether—it harms nearly every organ, especially your heart and lungs. Quitting is one of the most powerful steps toward better health.

Consistency is the Key
These aren’t one-time fixes. The secret lies in turning them into habits. Whether it’s drinking more water, taking the stairs, or choosing a home-cooked meal over fast food—these small steps, done consistently, can lead to lasting health benefits.

Dr. Tayal sums it up best: “Healthy living is about making better choices, one day at a time. You don’t have to change everything overnight. Just start small—and stay with it.”

In the hustle of modern life, it’s easy to believe that staying healthy requires complicated…

[58
281
post-1538","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-opinion","tag-the-best-things-in-life-are-simple
["GET
